I was born near Moscow in a small town, and grew up between Moscow and Kharkiv where my mother and grandmother lived respectively. I came to the UK to study first for economics degree (City St George, Toulouse School of Economics), then political science (University College London (UCL)), followed by PhD in Computational Social Science (completed in 2019, UCL, funded by ESRC). After that I have taught statistics in psychology (Edinburgh), did research in statistical methods (Edinburgh, Lancaster) that eventually led me to research in mental health where my horizons around what I see research methods and areas of enquiry have expanded. During this time I lived and worked in London, Toulouse, Edinburgh and now, Lancaster. In addition to my core training I always been interested in philosophy, sociology and gender studies, something that I have been focusing on more recently (also as a Dean of Social Science and Gender Studies Department at Svobodny University) in light of growing recognition of importance of not only different lenses but a wide angled approach to knowledge and research in the current challenging political and educational context.
Finally, I also write poetry, essays and short stories in both Russian and English. My first book is expected to be published in mid 2026 with independent publisher shell(f). Some of my poetry and essays are currently under submission but you can view a few pieces here. As a researcher I also look for ways in which science, research and art can speak with each other. Recently I took part at Lancaster Art’s Data Science Artist Residency where I worked together with an artist to translate and challenge research findings obtained using data science.
